What is Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a durable, tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and appearance. It protects weak teeth, repairs broken ones, and can even enhance your smile’s overall look. Each crown is designed to match your natural tooth color for a flawless finish.
When You Might Need a Dental Crown
Your dentist may recommend a crown if you have:
- A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
- A large filling that weakens the tooth structure
- A tooth that’s worn down or fragile
- A misshapen or severely discolored tooth
- A tooth that’s been treated with a root canal
- A dental implant that needs a protective restoration
How the Dental Crown Process Works
Examination & Tooth Preparation
Your dentist will first examine your tooth and may take X-rays to confirm that a crown is the right treatment. The tooth is then carefully reshaped to make space for the crown.
Impression & Temporary Crown
An impression of your tooth is taken to create a perfectly fitting, custom crown. While your permanent crown is being crafted at the dental lab, a temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth.
Custom Crown Placement
Once your permanent crown is ready—usually within one to two weeks—you’ll return for placement. The dentist will remove the temporary crown, check the fit and color of your new one, and securely bond it using dental cement.
Final Adjustments
The dentist makes final bite adjustments to ensure comfort and a natural feel. Once complete, your new crown will restore full strength, function, and beauty to your smile.
